You are no doubt an expert at something but that may not be an expert on WHMIS or someone who has knowledge of training people on WHMIS. But you still need to meet this requirement of having your employees understand WHMIS and be able to work safely with the controlled products you have in your workplace. Generic WHMIS training is a term you will often hear to describe a training course that covers the generic or common set of knowledge such as what WHMIS is, what the classifications of products are, what each WHMIS symbol means, and how to read WHMIS labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) which you provide to the employees for each of the products in your workplace. You may hear different terms for this such as, "generic WHMIS, basic WHMIS, WHMIS awareness" and typically refer to this first level of WHMIS education or training. Hands on WHMIS training is what people often use to refer to a second level of training that is done by the employer, a supervisor or manager or person who is knowledgeable on the actual use of each controlled product. This would cover an explanation of the hazards of the product, any personal protective equipment required, safe handling and storage procedures, safe work procedures and what to do in the event of an incident or emergency.
