Renew WHMIS…Renew WHMIS. I took WHMIS before but it was a couple years ago, how do I renew my WHMIS? WHMIS training is not something you will do one time. It is a requirement for employers to ensure their employees are knowledgeable on WHMIS and that is an ongoing requirement. At least once a year employers must review their WHMIS program and make sure their employees are aware of any changes. WHMIS testing is what most employers do to check their employee’s knowledge on whmis. You will hear different wording for this. Some of the phrases you may hear are "whmis retest, whmis renewal, whmis recertification, whmis retraining or just whmis training". Prove to me you know what WHMIS is about, is what they are basically saying. If you work with compressed gases, even something like a fire extinguisher, can you recognize the WHMIS symbol for compressed gases and do you know what kind of hazards compressed gases have. The knowledge or basic understanding of the classification of controlled products and the hazards they represent allows you to better understand the specific handling, use of and storage training that your employer will provide on each of the controlled products you work with or are present at your workplace. Does renew WHMIS mean the same as take WHMIS? It may mean a difference to some trainers or WHMIS providers. The common difference in some “renew WHMIS” programs is whether you are being trained or have access to the training materials; or whether you are just being tested or retested as part of a WHMIS renewal option. In most cases when someone talks about taking WHMIS they mean reviewing the materials and doing the WHMIS test.
